Author and naval officer. A close friend of Washington Irving, Paulding collaborated with him to produce the satirical periodical, Salmagundi. He also wrote poetry, fiction, and a popular biography of George Washington. President Martin Van Buren appointed Paulding Secretary of the Navy in 1839, in which post he served until 1841. Prominent politician of the Democratic Party during Iowa's early days as a state. Dodge was a supporter of the Homestead Bill, Compromise Bill of 1850, anti-slavery legislation, and temperance. He served 3 terms as a congressional representative (1840-1846) before becoming one of Iowa's first 2 senators.
